Why I Dance!

                                                                                                     Tessa F.
                                                                                                      Date: 5/9/11
                       Hobbies -Essay!                                                      Period: B-1
"There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good."  ~Edwin Denby. People ask me all the time why I dance, and how I stay so committed. I respond  "I can't stop loving it,"  and I never really knew why I loved it so much until now, now that think about it. I dance for relief, I dance for others joy, I dance to deliver a message, I dance to praise God, I dance to celebrate life, I dance when nothing else can cheer me up, I dance when nothing other than my body can tell a story or show an emotion that only pure movement can portray! I love to dance I love to move and spin, swirl, glide, and jump for joy. I can't picture a single perfect day that doesn't have dance in it, I love it too much. I have been dancing for 6 years and it never seems to get old. There's always something you can add to make it mean more, so it can touch peoples lives!
With all the  different kinds of people in this world there are many styles of dance so we as dancers can touch everyone that watches when we dance. The styles I personally do are: ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, tap, and hip-hop and ballroom a little, and I have taken African and Irish dance but not seriously. I love it, but it takes a lot of time and dedication and passion. I train 8 hours after school, but that's not counting what I do in school in my show choir, dance, ballroom, and hip-hop companies. Ya it gets crazy but I love it!
I honestly would not be able to describe in words what dance feels like. You're on stage and it feels like it's just you; even though there are people watching and other dancers on stage with you. It's a truly amazing feeling that you couldn't get from doing anything except dance, and that's why I dance! Dance inspires me to be a better person each day and to set goals and to get them. It has taught me to work hard and go for anything I want in life.
My dance teachers inspire me a lot and help me reach my goals and soon dreams. I hope I will go far in dance with everything I have learned from it. I want to become a professional performer, and just perform all the time everywhere. Then I want to get a degree in dance ed. and teach at or start a studio. My biggest goal is that someday I can become the kind of dancer that when people watch me they have true happiness! In closing I want to say that I hope I made you want to get up and dance so you can find the same joy I feel every day!

Goals- Eulogy

Goals- Eulogy
Knowing that my mother wouldn’t want me to cry is the only thing that is keeping me from it right now. My mom was an amazing person and I know she's going somewhere better than this earth that we all have to pass from eventually. My mother, Tessa was more than just a mom to many of us here today, her counsel and companionship was priceless. And as we look back on her life I hope we remember her as someone that will be remembered through the ages as someone that fulfilled all her obligations and responsibilities. When I think of my mom one thing that I think of is how she would always treat people with love. Even when she was busy she would make time for others to help and serve them. She was a good example of service to all those around her. We all can think of a memory with her where she lifted and strengthened others through her experience. She was a Christ like teacher and friend, and her influence on children was especially good.
Tessa was a dreamer, she loved to perform and be happy and you could tell when you were around her. She was very talented and liked to bring others joy through her abilities. I bet all of us here have seen her perform at least once in our lives and can all say she loved to dance and sing and she spent her time well doing it.
In my life personally I just want to acknowledge how great of a mom she was and how much she taught me about life through her silent example. I look up to her so much because she was never afraid to meet new people and teach them too. She was always teaching helping and lifting wherever she went. She was strong to her beliefs and always stood firm in her faith even through trials. In trails she was even more optimistic than in good times. Her faith never stopped amazing me. She truly led a life of legacy. I hope we can become more like her by following her example.

The Monster Within!

                                                                                        A-3 English
                                                                                                       11/18/10
The monsters in literature that stick with us through the decades are not the ones that come purely from imagination. The monsters that we write about, think about, and make movies about most are either the monsters that we create or the monsters we become. We are afraid of the part of ourselves that is most like the monsters we fear.
One example that supports this idea would be werewolves. A werewolf is a monster we fear because he/she/it represents the part of us that can’t control ourselves and the animal side of us that can’t reason.
Werewolves are scary, but what we most fear about them is the part that we ourselves have in common with them. Our worst habits and attributes make and inspire all monsters. We take the things we hate most about ourselves and exaggerate it, and eventually we come up with this big monster that is in reality a reflection of all the worst of us. This reflection is our own way of feeling secure, because we have something/ someone to blame all our horribleness on.
Werewolves are huge hairy creatures that come out at the full moon and loose all mannerisms. No one knows exactly for sure where or how the first werewolf came to be. But we do know that humans become werewolves when they are bitten by one. Often time’s humans are more afraid of becoming a werewolf then the actual werewolf, even though they are vicious monsters that are murderous and have no reason or since of control over themselves. People came up with the werewolf as a comfort in justifying others and their own failure to be able to control themselves, for example immorality, addiction, and bad habits and actions. People would just say that since a person is acting strange she/he must be a werewolf. Although on the other hand part of the reasons humans came up with the werewolf is to justify their own mistakes by having someone else to blame it on. Even though we know that not being able to control our own bad habits is horrible for us, our mistakes sometimes control us until we’ve lost all control of ourselves just like a werewolf we’re similar to them in this way. Knowing that you are somewhat like a monster can be scary too.
People become this monster when we can no longer control our natural human tendencies, desires, bad habits, and the more animalistic part of us shows; the part of us that just understands the need to survive. We fear this monster so much because we are afraid of losing all control of our innermost thoughts and free agency, the ability all of us have to make our own decisions. That’s a scary thought, having no control over ourselves. It’s bad enough when people are captives and have no control over their actions, but being a werewolf is like having someone control not only your actions but your own mind as well. It’s funny how much we love our ability to think and act for ourselves and how afraid we are of losing that capability.
We fear monsters that we ourselves make up because they emulate what we most fear and need to work on. We are afraid of our own failures and sometimes successes. This is why the monsters us humans make are so scary because we freak ourselves out and create things that in reality are fake. We can learn that instead of fearing and hiding from our weaknesses we should face our weaknesses and learn from them.

Ancient China

                                                           Ancient China!                              11/18/10 B-4 History
Introduction:
China’s culture is beautiful and amazing and with all that culture comes almost 5000 years of history, stories, and traditions. From the first dynasty until now is a legacy of hardship, war, and success. Only the land itself can tell of China’s past, and from its past where it’s going. Only time can tell the truly amazing story of Ancient China!
History and Dynasties of Ancient China:
China originated from many original tribes which fought and expanded to become what is now modern day China. China has progressed through five different major time periods: primitive society, slave society, feudal society, semi-feudal society, semi-colonial society, and finally now a socialist society since they became The People’s Republic of China on October 1, 1949.
Humans first came from India and Central Asia to China around 50,000 B.C. These people were Stone Age people that hunted, gathered, lived in caves with dogs, and wore fur and leather. Around 4000 B.C., they began to domesticate. They farmed rice and kept sheep and chickens. In 3000 B.C. people lived in houses, made pottery, and learned how to pull chariots with horses.
In the Bronze Age around 2000 B.C. the Chinese people had developed writing. Soon after the Shang Dynasty began, Shang’s army conquered most of China and united it under one emperor. From this point on people measure time in dynasties, or a family of related rulers.
In 1100 B.C. 481 B.C. the Chou Dynasty took over China and in 700 B.C. lead the people to make iron tools and weapons. In 481 B.C. China fell to ruins and consisted of 6 warring states that fought each other until 221 B.C. or the Qin or Ch’in Dynasty. In this dynasty the Great Wall of China was built. Then the Han Dynasty started the trade with Parthian and the Roman Emporia. They also invaded India and brought Buddhism to China. This success didn’t last very long and China fell apart again; but this time into three kingdoms in 220 A.D. In 581 A.D. Emperor Wen Ti took all three kingdoms and started the Sue Dynasty. During this time/dynasty Yang Ti made a canal to connect the Yellow River and Yantze River.
The next dynasty was the Tang Dynasty. Under this new rule taxes and trade became better and more organized. However, some civil wars weakened them until the Sung Dynasty took over in 960 A.D. By this time traders then started to sail south to India instead of using the Silk Road. In 1279 A.D. the Mongols who were from Asia conquered China. The Mongols did a good job in running the huge empire until people started dying from the plague and the empire fell apart. The Ming Dynasty took over China and they were finally an independent empire again.
Ancient Chinese Class System:
Like many ancient societies of the past, China had a very detonate class system. You could tell who was rich just from sight. Only rich people wore silk, because it was a symbol of their status. In some dynasties only rich people were allowed to wear smooth silk instead of itchy wool and cotton. Often the high ranking officials and the emperor himself would decorate themselves with: jade, gold, and silver bracelets. Women wore silk slippers and beautifully decorated wooden shoes unlike the straw shoes the lower classes wore. The richest man was always the emperor. The emperor and the empress often had different palaces and different gates to the same palace because no one could use the same gate as the emperor. In the Ming and Qing Dynasty the emperor lived in the Forbidden City.
During the Song Dynasty the rich began binding the feet of young girls with strips of cloth. This painful process stopped the growth of feet forcing woman to take small steps, and have very small feet. Because people thought small feet were so beautiful this painful foot binding process spread to other classes as well. Poor farm girls were the only luckily ones that didn’t have to suffer through this, because they were needed to work in the fields. This practice died out in the early 1900’s.
The Great Wall of China:
The Great Wall of China was built in the 7th century B.C. It was built for military defense much like the Hadrian’s Wall in Europe. In 221B.C. the Qin Dynasty unified the small city states that China had been made up of. Qin linked the walls that they had already built. Most of it was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Over the last 2000 years it’s been rebuilt and modified. The wall is mostly built of natural resources from the land like earth, stone, and compacted sand. Because it was always changing and being rebuilt it was very hard to determine the length, but it’s about 6000 kilometers. If counting all the separate walls in China it’s around 50000 kilometers.
The Qin Dynasty 221-206B.C.:
Qin Shi Huang, sometimes said as Chin, was one of China’s greatest and well-known leaders. He even gave China its name. He conquered and unified the 6 warring states. He built part of The Great Wall of China, 700 palaces, and his amazing tomb.
Qin was obsessed with the idea of becoming immortal. He wouldn’t even eat food that would make him fart or burp because he thought it would make him die sooner. There are a few legends that tell of his quests to find the elixir of immortally.
In 206 B.C. he was murdered at the age of 49, he had only reined over China for 11 years. He believed that whatever he was buried with would go with him to the afterlife. So he was buried in a huge tomb along with his army of 10,000 clay statues, known as the Terracotta Warriors. He was so worried about things being stolen out of his tomb that he even had the workers that designed it killed and buried with him in it so the secrets would be told.
            Conclusion:
In conclusion I want to say that I loved learning about ancient China.Ancient China is a truly magnificent place that has a lot of fertile culture and history. I hope someday I’ll be able to go to China to further explore their culture and way of life.

Frankenstein

Why Frankenstein is Scarier than His Monster!                           11/16/10 A-3
Victor Frankenstein is actually scarier then his monster because firstly the monster is pretty innocent, and secondly the ability people have to create evil is more powerful and horrific.
I think that Frankenstein’s monster was innocent because he just wanted to be loved. He wasn’t out to get anyone well except Dr. Frankenstein, in all truth he just wanted someone to love and someone to love him. What the monster looks like is what makes it creepy not its soul. Although I do think this monster has the ability to bring out the worst in us as people with our natural tendencies to judge.
I think that Frankenstein is scarier because he is actually able to create a monster out of dead people. Really who would even want to play with dead people? I think what individuals make is a reflection of themselves, and he make something evil so that’s pretty scary. So really he must be evil inside.

My Hero

                                                             My Hero                                       9/22/10 A-3 English
Imagine with me that you are meeting someone, anyone,  for the first time. You are soaking in their whole countenance. You're memorizing their face, voice, height, name, age, personality, and an amount of other things. Naturally with your human tendencies you're labling and judging them without even realizing. Do you think this person is: sloppy, insecure, confidant, lazy, or amazing? You're deciding from the moment you meet them.
Now imagine that you're interviewing my older sister Megan. You're now meeting her for the first time. She's just walked in the room with a smile on her face. You can see that she's very confidant and happy and knows what life's about. You can feel happiness radiating from her and you are effected by it. You feel comfortable in her influential presence. You can tell that this is a woman that is truly amazing.
My sister Megan is my hero, and I'm sure many others as well. Growing up with her I constantly got to watch and learn from her amazing example. She's has had a lasting influence on me and she's helped me become the person I am today. There's was no one that I look up to more.
She's a hero to me because  of  her spirit.  Not because she's beautiful, although she is, or has super powers. She's a hero because of the kind person she is. Her super power is the power to cause change in people for the better. Her ability to help people through her pure example is an amazing quality to have and someday I hope to achieve.
We should all care and watch and learn from people like Megan. It's people like her that change the world silently and lovingly. She's the most fabulous person I know. When I grow up I want to be like her and hopefully be a hero to someone too!

Made up myth by tfit

The Curse of Beauty                                                   9/21/10 A-3
Zeus half-heartedly sat in his magnificent heavenly throne longing and wishing for something, anything to happen. For the world was at peace and after many years of working to make sure the world below is all right, one gets very board and lonesome.  Zeus was sick of it. He wanted something more. In his determination to seek out adventure, he found himself rejecting his many servants desperate plea to serve him in any way possible.  Zeus, finding his servants as somewhat of an annoyance, sent them off to give one of the other Gods grapes all day. Zeus, now pacing the beautiful grounds of the heavens out of pure boredom, leaned over all the many clouds to take another glance at the never changing world below. Suddenly he viewed something new for the first time. In the land below lived a fair maiden. She was so fair in fact that her beauty exceeded all others that lived or had lived in all the land.
“Wow, I’ve never beheld a creature with such enormous beauty in all my life. I need to somehow meet that girl and make her my queen.  Oh, but what should I do about Hera?” Zeus whispered with lust.
Meanwhile in the world below lived the most beautiful maiden, her name was Oceana and the most handsome wealthy men in the entire valley sought after her. From near and far they would travel just to be in her presence. Many times she got asked for her hand in marriage, but she would always decline, feeling that there was someone extra ordinary waiting for her somewhere.
One beautiful summer’s day Oceana went to visit her favorite location on the river, not far from where she lived. As she took her bucket down to the water’s edge to recover some water suddenly Zeus appeared to her saying, “Will you please do me the honor of becoming my queen?”
Just as Oceana was about to say yes, Hades suddenly appeared and took her captive.
“I’ve got your sweet heart for myself now brother! Ha!” Hades said with confidence.
With that he dragged Oceana down to the depths of the underworld where he hid his newly stolen lover.
“You’ll stay here until I find it safe for you and me to be together at last,” Hades said with a chuckle.
Oceana stood there in a hot, black, and darkly abysmal room that mysteriously was still in some way elegant. With wide-eyed wonder, and a little terror, she marveled at the events which had just so drastically changed her life.  Confused, hot and afraid she sat there crying for what seemed a life time. From a little above Persephone (Hade’s captive wife) heard her bellows and with the least bit of allowance went down to Oceana to make her stop.
“Who are you and why are you crying, and still alive,” Persephone yelled.
“I’m Oceana and I don’t know exactly why I’m here,” Oceana said.
“Well I’ll go find out and come back and tell you,” replied Persephone.
What seemed to be hours passed and there was still no sign of Persephone. Finally she came running to share the news she had received from her hell hounds.
“I might have a chance to escape this awful place! It seems my husband has taken a liking to you, but the problem is that Zeus has too. I feel bad for you sister, one god is bad enough. There are ever rumors of war over your affections circulating around up there. How do you feel now that you’re causing a war because of your beauty? All I know is if there is a war we are all in big trouble!”  Persephone lamented.
Persephone left quickly and never returned. There Oceana sat with all her worries, not knowing what was going to happen to her, or what was taking place in the world above.
Mean while a war between Hades and Zeus over Oceana was raging in the world above. The world was in ruins and chaos was beheld everywhere the eye could see. This war gave many people despair. They knew not the reason of which their world was being destroyed. Even the other gods didn’t know why this war was being fought. Every single person on the whole face of the earth wept for days, and their tears are what caused the Nile River to form.
When Hera (Zeus’s wife) had found out the real reason for this terrible war she decided that she would put an end to the war and this mortal hussy.
“Hermes, I have a very crucial job for you, can you go to the underworld and retrieve this Oceana girl from her prison. We’re going to make an end to this war and the girl. Be very careful, I want her alive!” whispered Hera.
“I’ll do it for you and to end the war,” Hermes replied.
Hermes snuck past Persephone and stole Oceana and flew her back up to Hera. After Hera had received Oceana, she locked her at the bottom of the Nile where she still remains in her prison banging on the doors. Her bangings are what cause the Nile River to flow north to south, instead of south to north like most rivers. When the Nile over flows is when Zeus or Hades try to see their long lost lover once more, by trying to break into Oceana’s prison cell. Although it won’t work because Hera made sure that Oceana would be locked up for eternity with all her pity and beauty.
